Explore and manage DataFlex workspaces with DFXray

Lesson 1- Running DFXray

In this lesson, you will learn how to open and explore DataFlex workspaces using DFXray, a helpful tool that gives you an overview of all registered environments on your machine. Whether you're working in a development setup or on a production server without Studio installed, this video walks you through three ways to select and open a workspace. You'll also discover a useful shortcut for launching the correct Studio version from DFXray.

  • Open DFXray

  • Launch DFXray from your taskbar.
    • It displays a list of all registered DataFlex workspaces on your machine, regardless of the DataFlex version.
  • Use the Workspace Filter

    • The filter field is automatically selected when the panel opens.

    • Begin typing to narrow down the list of workspaces.

    • Select the workspace you need from the list.

  • Running on a Production Server

    • If you're on a production server with no Studio installed, there may be no registered workspaces listed.

  • Option 2: Use the Web Apps Button

    • Click the "Web Apps" button to display all running web applications on the machine.

    • Use the filter to find and select an app.

    • If the app source folder is not found, a warning will appear. This is expected and only affects certain features like source code search.

  • Option 3: Browse for a Workspace File

    • Use the "Browse" option to select workspace files manually:

      • .sws files (Studio workspace files) provide access to both the database and source code.

      • .ws files (workspace files) provide access to the database only.

      • .cfg files are also supported but do not provide source code access.

  • Using DFXray as a Studio Launcher

    • DFXray can also launch workspaces in the correct version of the Studio.

    • Navigate to a workspace (for example, the FlexTron sample).

    • Press Alt + S to open it in the matching Studio version.

    • This is helpful when you have many Studio versions installed and can't remember which version a workspace belongs to.
